[JES 김범석.임현동] 주진모가 흥행작 <미녀는 괴로워>(리얼라이즈픽처스. 김용화 감독)로 전성기를 맞고 있다. ‘완소남(완전히 소중한 남자라는 뜻)’ 대열에도 합류했다. 본인은 “동방신기가 된 기분”이라고 했다.

23일 서울 강남구 신사동에서 SBS TV <게임의 여왕> 촬영 중 짬을 내 만난 주진모는 “평소 연락을 안 하던 사람들까지 축하 전화를 하는 걸 보면 반응이 있긴 있는 모양”이라며 웃었다. 정작 자신은 드라마 스케줄에 쫓기느라 인기를 실감하지 못한다고 했다.

“김승우·장동건 형들도 ‘우리 진모. 이제 뜨는 거야?’라며 자신의 일처럼 좋아해요. 슈퍼주니어까지 영화 잘 봤다고 전화를 하더라니까요. 놀랐어요. 아중씨도 잘했고. 무엇보다 김용화 감독에게 고맙죠.”

주진모는 영화계에서 ‘저평가된 우량주’였다. 믿음직한 연기력과 중저음. 완벽한 신체조건을 갖췄지만 작품운이 따라주지 않았다. 그러나 SBS TV <패션70’s>에 이어 <미녀는 괴로워>로 부진을 털어내고 있다. 주진모는 일이 안 풀려 올 여름 무속인을 찾아가기도 했단다.

“2006년은 소처럼 죽어라고 일한대요. 그리고 2007년부터 서서히 수확한다고 하더라고요. 지금까진 점괘가 맞은 것 같은데 앞으로도 열심히 진심을 갖고 일해야죠.”

음반 프로듀서 상준 역에 대해 주진모는 “역할 모델이 있었다”고 했다. 1990년대 안재욱·김정민의 음반을 프로듀싱한 강민 대표가 그 주인공.

“오디션 보는 장면의 ‘그래요. 나도 아파요’ 같은 대사와 고개를 45도 비딱하게 기울이는 장면 등이 그 분을 오래 관찰한 덕분에 나온 설정이었어요. 의상도 많이 참고했죠.”

주진모는 흥행보다 더 반가운 건 “원하는 A급 시나리오가 들어오고 있다는 사실”이라고 했다. “솔직히 좋은 시나리오를 가장 먼저 못 받는 배우라는 점에서 한이 많았어요. 그럴 때마다 독기를 품었죠. ‘그래 언젠가 기회를 잡으면 모든 걸 보여주마’ 하고 말이죠.”

강원도 강릉과 서울 워커힐호텔. SBS를 오가며 촬영 중인 그는 “1월까진 꼼짝 못하지만 드라마만 끝나면 원없이 자고. 모처럼 술에도 취해보고 싶다”며 웃었다.

끝으로 영화 속 상준과 한나는 어떻게 될까. “상준이 개과천선한 만큼 한나에게 ‘우리 진실되게 사귀어 보자’고 프러포즈할 것 같은데요. 하하.”
